Wow... after four years the blogger guys finally redesign their site
Sunday, May 02, 2004
Back in *my* day, the exploding dog guy (see posts from a million years ago) used Microsoft Paint, not some anti-aliased pressure-sensitive Photoshop bullsh*t!
Humbug.
Humbug.
You know, I never thought about it before, but "micro" was a real big word a few years ago. I just noticed that I called my take on Dancer in the Dark a "microreview," as in "microcinema" or "microsound." I think "macro" is due for a comeback. Let's make macroeconomics and macrobiotics cool again!
There's something satisfying about burning credit card offers.
You should try it.
You should try it.
By the way, the Fine Arts theater I mention 4 years ago has since been bought out by Sony and then closed. Bastards. It had a great lobby...
And I still want to know what happens if you insure a box of your artwork for $5000 and they lose it. This is no doubt a stupid question with a simple answer, but I want that goddamn answer.
You know, you'd think that Blogger would have redesigned their site once or twice since 2000.

If you insure a box of your artwork for $5,000,
and they lose the package in the mail,
can you say there were diamonds in it?
and they lose the package in the mail,
can you say there were diamonds in it?
sometimes a miracle happens, and you cannot question it.
four months ago my camcorder charger broke in the mail.
but today it started working again.
i did not hit it.
i did not sing to it.
i may have threatened it with a screwdriver once, but i apologized.
it simply started to work because it had to.
if you love something, set it free.
if it comes back broken, give it time to heal.

Microreview
Saw Dancer in the Dark. last night with Amy, Heather, Sabrina, Yanco and this girl Sarah. Gee, Lars Von Trier must be a real revolutionary to use digital cameras and jump cuts! The movie wasn't that bad, but it wasn't that good, either. It was dragging its feet when it should have been running. My mind was wandering even during the first act, which is not a good sign. Anyway, with tighter editing, the emotional impact it had on me would have been much greater.
Besides, I didn't even think the direction was that strong. The performances were curiously by-the-book and largely uninspired, and the camera angles seemed entirely improvised. Shaky handheld camerawork was pretty new and exciting in the 60s, but now you've got to find a new way to approach it. I mean, just because you're using a handheld camera doesn't mean your camera operator should just wander around without your input. And if you're the director and camera operator, maybe you should pick one job and do it well.
On the other hand, it's nice to see something that looks and works differently than traditional films, so I'm glad the movie is out there. Revolutionary? No. Thousands of kids with iMovie are making much more revolutionary movies.
I can't wait till they get older.
